(comment) The first paperback volume of Hiroo Terada's "Mouretsu-sensei," serialized since 1958 in Kobunsha's monthly manga magazine "Shonen." This judo action drama features a young man, once called the Red Demon of the Kodokan, who, after undergoing long training and opening a dojo, confronts conspiracies alongside his comrades. Breaking the convention of contemporary manga which often had boys and girls as the main characters to match the reader's perspective, this early representative work by Hiroo Terada is remarkable for its unusual setting, featuring an adult male protagonist and depicting a romance with the heroine. This title is also considered the prototype of the well-known work "Kurayami Godan," which was adapted into a drama. The reasons behind the protagonist’s actions, the setting of the antagonistic group, and their misdeeds were somewhat realistic, so the protagonist, who cared so deeply for others and struggled with himself in the story, must have been seen as fresh and vivid by readers at the time. This realistic approach may have been Terada Hiroo’s counter and response to the rise of the gekiga style in the manga world during that period, which emphasized realism and dramatic elements. The tankobon volumes published by Toho Manga Publishing were released as a complete series titled "Hiroo Terada Manga Collection," consisting of five volumes in total. The complete set introduced this time is a collection of all volumes in very well-preserved condition, with none being rental editions and all including dust jackets. As expected, there are some minor tears on the dust jackets of each volume, a small rubber band mark on the cover of volume 1, and the back cover of the dust jacket for volume 5 shows some noticeable stains, but it is extremely rare to have a complete set in such condition (Kubo).
