(comment) Originally, "Kiki's Delivery Service" was planned to be directed by a young director and primarily produced by young animators. This is why the release gap between the previous film, "My Neighbor Totoro," and "Kiki's Delivery Service" was only about a year. After various twists and turns, by the time Hayao Miyazaki took over as director, the foundation of the film's image had already been drawn by talented young animators. This is probably also why this film is not included in the publication schedule for the currently ongoing "Hayao Miyazaki Image board Collection," as Hayao Miyazaki himself hardly drew any Setting or images for " Kiki's Delivery Service " in the first place. One of the young animators who solidified the image of " Kiki's Delivery Service Service" from the early stages of the project, before Miyazaki's involvement, was Katsuya Kondo, who drew this sketch. Kondo has been involved in Miyazaki's works since "Castle in the Sky," and in this film, he was in charge of character design and animation direction. In the staff credits, Katsuya Kondo, Shinji Otsuka, and Yoshifumi Kondo are listed separately as "animation" staff in addition to the key animation staff, and it is recorded that most of the early Image board were drawn by these "animation" staff members. However, given that Katsuya Kondo corrected Otsuka's key drawings during actual production, it is thought that he played a role similar to that of a chief animation director among the three animation staff. In fact, Miyazaki's anime is characterized by the fact that the entire screen becomes Miyazaki's style through the extensive corrections that Hayao Miyazaki makes, but astonishingly, in this film, there are instances where Kondo makes further corrections to Miyazaki's corrections, an unusual process. This may be due to the short production period, or perhaps Miyazaki himself was being modest because he joined the project midway through. In any case, the result was that Miyazaki and Kondo's styles harmonized in "Kiki's Delivery Service , and others Ghibli work. Turning to this sketch, the main character Kiki is depicted in what appears to be Kondo's style from the time of production. The style is similar to Miyazaki's, so it doesn't seem to be from the early stages of planning, but judging from the unfinished profile and the test sketches of slight changes in expression, it seems to have been drawn while confirming the feel of the character. In particular, the Kiki on the left, drawn firmly in pencil, is exactly as she appears in the film, making it impossible not to realize that Kondo was responsible for the character design of that movie. It is rare to see the charm of an individual's drawing utilized to this extent in a Miyazaki anime, and I hope this sketch will serve as a clue to re-evaluating the animator Katsuya Kondo. z133 |
